The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His being was essentially unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to tend to his herd of rams.

Their low murmuring and the rustling of the wind through the lone tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his wards imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

But, read more there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.

Narratives of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to help but discovered no wolf.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
